Swedish Word of the Week | Snö

Our Swedish Word of the Week is Snö. Besides fika, this might be the swedes favorite word!

Snö=Snow

So I am from the south and we get snow maybe twice a year and everything shuts down…and I mean everything. We just aren’t prepared for her because it happens so little. While living there of course the meaning of the word snow changed. It meant light first of all. The fall can be so dark and dreary. The days get really short. (think Alaska) But with the snow comes the reflection of what little light they receive from the sky. Whether the sun be out that day or the moon…the snow makes everything so much brighter. And of course there is so much fun to be had in the snow. My husband loves to cross country ski and so do many other Swedes. He was practically born with skis on his feet. I think for the most part Swedes love the snow. Of course I’m sure they get tired of it and not all look forward to it with the same anticipation but it is such a nice change from the wet and rainy fall. I never got tired of seeing it. And honestly winter is my favorite season over there.

A winter scene in southern Sweden.
