Swedish Word of the Week | Mysig

Today we are going to learn one of my most favorite Swedish words, mysig. It’s an especially nice word on a cold, winter day like today.

mysig=cozy

Being cozy is such an important state to be in Sweden, especially during the harsh winter months. A great way to be mysig is to light a couple of tea lights during fika.

Another term related to the word mysig is “Fredagsmys”, which mean Friday’s cozyness (kinda, I don’t even know that cozyness is a word but you get the idea!) Fredagmys usually means cozying up in the living room with friends and/or family and watching a movie while eating candy and junk food.

I like the urbandictionary definition of the word::: Fredagsmys is pretty much the most holy tradition of Sweden. The word originates from two words; “fredag” and “mys”, which roughly translates to Friday and cozy. Every Friday, all Swedes drive by the supermarket to buy ingredients for taco, soda and chips. Then, they all sit down in their sofas with their families or friends and watch telly. Usually, the parents fall asleep after a few glasses of wine or beer while the kids stuff themselves with chips until they have a stomach ache.

My girls love Fredagsmys! So this weekend, be Swedish! Pop some popcorn, open up a bag of candy, pour the soda, and watch a movie (extra credit for watching a Swedish movie!) with your favorite people.
