Tomorrow we celebrate the first day of spring! And so that is our Swedish word of the week this week! Vår is the Swedish word for spring. This time of year is much anticipated in Sweden. Winters are hard and long. Much of the country endures darkness most of the day. Spring means light is coming! It means long walks in the forest and swims in the many lakes of Sweden. Swedes are very active and love to be outdoors walking, biking, canoeing, swimming, gardening, etc.
The country takes on such an amazing transformation…everything that was white and gray now become a vibrant green. Flowers pop up from the ground and and splashes of color to the fields. The lakes start to move as the frozen top begins to melt. And should you be there on a particular sunny day do not be surprised to see many Swedes sitting in a chair, facing the sun with their eyes closed soaking up the vitamin D.
